Beginner's Workshop 2025

Thank you for your interest in our tattoo workshop! Please review all details below. If you’d like to apply for the Beginner Tattoo Workshop, please fill out the application form.

This is a 5-day, in-person, skill-focused workshop in Tarzana, LA.

In 2025, our complete tattoo training is structured into four main workshops:

  • Beginner Workshop: Tattoo liner skills (lining, stippling, whip shading) + sanitization + operational habits correction
  • Shading Workshop: Tattoo mag shading skills
  • Color Workshop: Tattoo color skills
  • Gray Wash Workshop: Gray wash + advanced shading skills (mag combined with liner and round shader)

This one is the Beginner Workshop, in which we:

  • Introduce all the foundational knowledge needed to start tattooing, such as what supplies to buy, how to get a tattoo license, and how to choose a career direction
  • Teach all liner-related tattoo skills (lining, stippling, whip shading)
  • Build sanitized and effective operational habits for tattoo practice, such as machine angles and needle depth—setting a solid foundation for working on real skin
  • Provide all necessary supplies, including a brand-new tattoo machine

Note: This workshop does not include any mag shading skills. All techniques are practiced on fake skin.

Price and Dates:

  • Beginner Workshop coached by Jing: $2,700 / 5 days (July 7–11)
  • Beginner Workshop coached by Rachel: $1,800 / 5 days (dates not confirmed—likely August or September)

Class size: 7–10 students

The Patch Apprenticeship Program

This is a separate training that starts after the Beginner Workshop. In it, we help our apprentices:

  • Start working on real skin
  • Transfer skills learned in the Beginner Workshop onto real skin
  • Build sanitized and efficient operational habits for real skin
  • Begin marketing themselves as tattoo artists with a personal style
  • Launch their careers and start building a clientele

The apprenticeship is selective on both sides. You’ll be asked whether you’d like to join the program when signing up for the Beginner Workshop.

After completing the Beginner Workshop, we’ll select 2–4 students to join the apprenticeship. Upon completing the program, you’ll become a resident tattoo artist at Patch Tattoo Therapy, with access to all internal training workshops and priority access to advanced workshops.

Apprenticeship Price:

  • $6,500 / 5 months
  • First 4 months: trained by the Patch training team (experienced tattoo artists trained by Jing)
  • Final month: trained by Jing

Note: Graduation is not guaranteed. If an apprentice cannot keep up with the training pace, we may ask them to leave the program and issue a partial refund based on the timeline.

Also, this apprenticeship does not include guidance on techniques not covered in the beginner class, such as shading or coloring. Apprentices are not allowed to accept tattoo requests involving these skills until later, once properly trained. However, they may refer those requests to resident artists and earn a commission.
